Chem                    Quiz #4

1. (5 pt.)  I have a solution that is 3.5 M NaOH, what is its % by mass NaOH?

 3.5 moles NaOH  *  40.0 g NaOH  * 1 L    *  1 mL solution  =  0.140 g NaOH/g solution = 14 g/100 g solution

        L NaOH solution     1 mol NaOH   1000 mL  1 g solution

2. (6 pt) Write the molecular formulas of the POSSIBLE products of the following reactions in aqueous solution:

Iron (III) chloride + magnesium bromide Y MgCl2 + FeBr3

Strontium (IV) chloride + manganese (V) chloride Y MnCl5 + SrCl4

LiCl(aq) + NaNO3 (aq) Y LiNO3 + NaCl

3. (4 pt) How would you determine the actual products obtained in question #2?

Determine the solubility of each of the products.  Since these are all ionic compounds in solution, if the products are soluble they remain ions in solution.  If the products are insoluble, they precipitate out.
